Villarreal was founded in 1923 and started in the lower divisions of La Liga debut for another 75 years, in 1998. The Villarreal fans waited a long time for the club to reach the mountaintop, but there were some successes along the way.
Just before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, Villarreal, then called Club Deportivo Villarreal, won the regional league. The club changed their name to the current Villarreal CF in 1954 and were finally promoted to the Tercera Division in 1956. However, they were relegated in 1961 and found themselves back in the regional leagues.
Over the next ten years, the club steadily improved and returned to the Tercera Liga in 1967. An important moment in the Villarreal stats was earning promotion to the second division for the first time in 1970. Unfortunately, the next 20 years were characterized by moving back and forth between the lower leagues.
Then, “The Yellow Submarine” managed two consecutive promotions in 1991 and 1992 to reach the second division once again. In 1998, they made the promotion playoffs with a coveted promotion to La Liga on the line. Villarreal drew with Compostela 0-0 at home and 1-1 on the road. With the away goals rule in their favor, Villarreal gained promotion to La Liga for the first time.
Villarreal’s debut season in La Liga was one to forget, as they immediately went back down to the second division. In 2000 they reached La Liga again by finishing third in the Segunda Division. They won the Valencia.
Retaining their Intertoto Cup title, Villarreal qualified for the UEFA Cup once again. In the 2004-05 season, the Yellow Submarine finished third and qualified for the Champions League for the first time. Against the La Liga odds, Villarreal had their best-ever top-flight season in 2008, finishing as runners-up.
Villarreal were relegated again in 2012 but picked themselves back up over the next decade. They’ve regularly played in European competitions since and one of the most notable Villarreal CF stats comes from 2021. Villarreal defeated Champions League followed.
Betting advice implies that Villarreal are a tough pick away from home. They won just six road La Liga matches in 2021-22. However, they have the best odds to win the league outside of last season’s top four, at +4000.
