Panathinaikos Stats & History
Panathinaikos were founded in 1908 as the soccer team of the linios sports club. Panathinaikos are the second-most successful side in Greek football, only behind bitter rivals Olympiacos.
In 1914, the club changed their name to linios Podosfairikos Omilos until settling on Panathinaikos in 1924. While the club’s best periods were later in the 20th century, the first title in the Panathinaikos team stats came in 1930. That year, they managed to win the second edition of the Hellenic National League.
Ten years later, Panathinaikos won their first of 19 Greek Cups. Soon after, the Greco-Italian war broke out and many of Panathinaikos’ players ed the Hellenic army. After a difficult period for the club, they managed to win the 1948 Greek Cup and the 1949 Greek championship.
Local rivals Olympiacos got the better of Panathinaikos in the 1950s but the tides shifted in the 1960s. Panathinaikos won five titles over the next six years starting with 1960. Under coach Stjepan Bobek, Panathinaikos won the 1964 title unbeaten.
Domestic Doubles and Cup Runs
Lakis Petropoulos was the head coach for the first domestic double in the Panathinaikos team stats, in 1969. In 1971, Panathinaikos went on an incredible run in the London.
Since then, Panathinaikos have also gone on other memorable runs in UEFA Champions League.
Just six of Panathinaikos’ 43 major trophies have come since 1996, but they did manage another memorable run in the 2001-02 Champions League. They beat FC Barcelona on the way to the UCL quarterfinals. Panathinaikos won more domestic doubles in 2004 and 2010.
Riots in a 2012 derby match versus Olympiacos caused big changes at the club. The entire board of the club quit and the fans ended up buying the shares of long-term owner Giannis Vardinogiannis. Panathinaikos managed to win the 2014 and 2022 Greek Cups.
