Workers in Graz founded SK Sturm Graz in 1909. They immediately started a rivalry with neighbors Grazer AK, which was a team founded by academics. Sturm Graz found success in the regional leagues, winning 11 Styrian titles between 1921 and 1949.
When Austria was annexed by the Nazi regime in 1938, Austrian clubs began to take part in German competitions. Sturm Graz took part in the Tschammerpokal, the equivalent of the modern-day DFB-Pokal. They also played in one of the top flight regional Gauligas established by the Germans.
The first season in the Arsenal knocked them out in the second round.
The Austrian Bundesliga, in its modern-day form, was introduced in 1974. After finishing as runners-up in the 1974-75 Austrian Cup, SK Sturm Graz qualified for the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. They made a run to the quarterfinals, but fell to Eintracht Frankfurt.
Sturm Graz nearly won the Austrian Bundesliga title in 1980-81 but came in second place. Their best performance in the UEFA Cup came in 1983-84. It took Nottingham Forest extra time to knock Sturm Graz out in the quarterfinals.
The best period in the SK Sturm Graz stats was in the mid-to-late 90s, under Ivica Osim. Osim guided them to a second-place finish in 1995 and they won their first major trophy in 1996, the Austrian Cup. Mario Haas was an iconic player during this era and led the league in scoring in 1995, 1998 and 1999. He helped them win their first Austrian Bundesliga title, in 1998.
Sturm Graz completed their first-ever domestic double in 1999, with Austrian Bundesliga and Cup triumphs. In 2000-01, Sturm Graz reached the second group stage of the Champions League for the first time. Since then, they’ve won the Austrian Bundesliga in 2011 and the Austrian Cups in 2010 and 2018.
In line with their Europa League odds in 2021-22, Sturm Graz were eliminated in the group stage. While still yet to be determined, as of August 2022 Sturm Graz are guaranteed to be playing in European competition in 2022-23. Betting advice often mentioned how common the over was in their matches in 2021-22. They scored nearly two and conceded almost one and a half goals per game in the Austrian Bundesliga last season.
