Borussia Dortmund Stats & History
Local Dortmund men unhappy playing for the Catholic church-sponsored Trinity Youth founded Borussia Dortmund in 1909. In 1913, Dortmund adopted their famous black and yellow kits. In their early years, Dortmund played in local leagues and didn’t have too much success.
After WWII, the top division of German soccer featured regional leagues and a combined championship round. Dortmund played in the Oberliga West, which was seen as the most competitive. By defeating Karlsruher SC 4-2 in 1956, they claimed their first national title in the Borussia Dortmund stats. One year later, Dortmund repeated as national champions by defeating Hamburg.
Just before the advent of the Bundesliga, Dortmund won their third national title. They became a founding member of the Bundesliga in 1963. While Dortmund had to wait sometime before capturing their first Bundesliga title, they won the DFB-Pokal in 1965. One season later, they managed to win their first European silverware in the Cup Winners’ Cup.
The club went through a decline in the 1970s and nearly went bankrupt. They were relegated from the Bundesliga in 1972 but opened the Westfalenstadion, now renamed the Signal Iduna Park, in 1974. BVB returned to the Bundesliga in 1976 but they didn’t fare too much better in the 80s. They did, however, close the decade out with a DFB-Pokal win in 1989.

In 1992, Dortmund got close to winning the Bundesliga title and finished second. The following season, they made the final of the UEFA Champions League title.
In 2002, Dortmund won another Bundesliga title but the 2010s were a much more prosperous period for the club. Under manager Jurgen Klopp they won back-to-back titles again in 2011 and 2012. In 2012, they managed a league and DFB-Pokal double, their first ever. In 2013, they faced rivals Bayern Munich in the Champions League final but fell 2-1. Dortmund also won DFB-Pokal trophies in 2017 and 2021.
