Lookman Powers Atalanta to UEL Win
Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta executed the perfect gameplan on Wednesday vs. previously unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen. La Dea relentlessly pressed Leverkusen and gave them very little time on the ball. Lookman had the game of his life as he executed three incredible finishes for the first hat trick in the Final of a UEFA competition since 1975.
Atalanta had already qualified for the Champions League through Serie A and now they can rest easy, with their first major European trophy. There is speculation that longtime manager Gasperini may be ing Napoli in the Summer so the remaining Serie A table and no higher than third. Atalanta have won their last five Serie A games and are just two points behind both Bologna and Juventus.
Charles de Ketelaere has scored three goals in his last two Serie A matches for La Dea. Gianluca Scamacca has also been in good form and he should be the one leading the line for Italy at Euro 2024 this Summer. Marten de Roon is injured and Hans Hateboer is suspended for Atalanta on Sunday but expect Gasperini to rotate his squad.
Torino’s European Hopes Still Alive
Torino’s hopes of finishing in the European places are very much still alive. A lot will depend on the Fiorentina standings and the Viola’s performance in the UEFA Europa Conference League Final but Torino can do themselves a world of good by winning their final match of the season on Sunday. There are a few scenarios in which Torino can qualify for European competitions.
If Torino finishes in eighth place, they’re guaranteed a spot in at least the Conference League. Currently, Torino is in ninth, one point behind Fiorentina, who have two more games to play. If Atalanta finishes in fifth and Fiorentina wins the Conference League Final but finishes outside the top seven, Torino can qualify for the Conference League in ninth. All of this amounts to Torino needing to win on Sunday, with Napoli just one point back.
Il Toro has played quite well recently and is coming off a 3-1 win over AC Milan. Duvan Zapata and Ivan Ilic scored headers while Ricardo Rodriguez scored a screamer for his first-ever goal with the club. Torino have won their last two matches and three of their last six have finished in scoreless draws. This season, Torino matches have averaged just 1.86 goals per game, by far the lowest figure in Serie A.
