How Far Will England Go?

Results: England 3-0 Senegal

Jude Bellingham is just THAT good. The young midfielder dominated the midfield as England overcame a sluggish start against Senegal to stroll into a quarter-final date with after a 3-0 win.

In the first 30 minutes, the AFCON champions capitalized on several England mistakes while playing out from the back, with Jordan Pickford saving well from Boulaye Dia and Watford’s Ismaila Sarr poking over.

Against the run of play, Jude Bellingham’s byline run and cutback found Jordan Henderson, starting in a three-person midfield, who swept home for his third career England goal.

England doubled their lead just before half-time, and it was down to Jude Bellingham. The prodigiously-talented 19-year old slalomed his way through the Senegal midfield, finding Phil Foden, keeping his place from the Wales game, and squaring it to Kane.

The England captain thumped home, drawing within one goal of Wayne Rooney’s England scoring record. In the 57th minute, Foden secured his second assist, standing up his man on the touchline before whipping it across the goal for Bukayo Saka.

The Arsenal winger dinked a finish over Edouard Mendy, giving England a 3-0 lead that felt unassailable. Clinical performance for England when they got their chances. awaits in the same stadium in six days.

ENG England: Southgates Changes Make Impact

Standings: 3-0 W vs. Wales
Injuries and Suspensions: None Reported

England’s performance vs. the Wales game, Southgate made four changes to the starting XI that paid dividends.

Foden replaced Bukayo Saka in the lineup and Marcus Rashford came in for left winger Raheem Sterling. Jordan Henderson also slotted into central midfield in place of Mason Mount and Kyle Walker replaced Kieran Trippier at right back. Rashford managed to score a brace vs. Wales and one of them was on a stunning free kick. Foden also scored in the 3-0 win and they’ve both given Southgate something to think about ahead of Sunday’s FIFA round of 16 match.

It’s somewhat impressive that England have managed to go unbeaten in the group stage despite Harry Kane not scoring a single goal. Kane won the World Cup Golden Boot in 2018 and the Three Lions usually rely on him as their main scoring outlet. He’s played as a provider instead, with three assists in three matches. At +850 odds to win the World Cup, England are serious contenders but the risk of a poor performance is always there.

SEN Senegal: Koulibaly’s Heroics Send Them Through

Standings: 2-1 W vs. Ecuador
Injuries and Suspensions: M Cheikhou Kouyate (Day-to-Day), M Idrissa Gueye (Suspended)

After a 2-0 loss to the Netherlands in their opening match, it looked likely that Senegal’s World Cup would end early. Missing their best player Sadio Mane and needing to pick up points in both their matches seemed to be a mountain to climb. Aliou Cissé’ side made great headway when they defeated Ecuador to advance. The Lions of Teranga put on a gutsy performance in the group stage finale to send Ecuador packing and qualify for their first round of 16 since 2002.

Ismaila Sarr was excellent on Monday and opened up the scoring in the 44th minute with a calmly taken penalty. Ecuador’s Moises Caicedo equalized in the second half but Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly scored a 70th minute go-ahead goal. Senegal held tight defensively and held on for a remarkable 2-1 win. They finished in second place in the Group A FIFA standings but they’ll be missing one of their key players in the round of 16.

Idrissa Gueye has been a mainstay in the center of the pitch for Senegal for over ten years. He’s accumulated two yellow cards, though, and will miss Sunday’s match vs. England. Leicester City man Nampalys Mendy may fill in for him. Attacking midfielder Iliman N’Diaye was also excellent in his first start of the World Cup, vs. Ecuador, and it remains to be seen whether Cisse will give him the start.

Match Analysis and Odds:

This has the potential to be an uncomfortable match for England. Senegal outplayed the Netherlands for long stretches of their group stage opener and have talented players. The Lions of Teranga take the game to their opponents and won’t be intimidated by the occasion. After all, they did manage to win the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations. They’ve shown they can cope without Sadio Mane but they’ll undoubtedly miss his goal scoring ability in the knockout rounds.

Regardless, the England vs Senegal odds list the Three Lions as one-goal favorites for World Cup history and sit at +675 odds to defeat England here.

A draw shows +285 odds and the over/under total for the match is two goals. Senegal’s last two matches have gone over that total and two of England’s three have as well.

England have certainly turned it on in major tournaments lately. They made the final of last year’s European Championship and reached the semifinals of the World Cup four years ago. That experience could serve them well here but they’ve been quite inconsistent in 2022.
