NASCAR at Sonoma Raceway History & Highlights

The Toyota/Save Mart 350 ed the Cup Series calendar in 1989. The race replaced the event at Riverside International Raceway, another road course in California. Riverside closed in 1988, and Sonoma Raceway, a comparable length, and similarly challenging track, was available for an event. Ricky Rudd won the first Cup Series event there in 1989. As the race approaches, excitement builds, and fans eagerly await the unveiling of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 odds, anticipating the thrilling competition that lies ahead.

From 1989 to 1997, the Cup Series used the 2.52-mile layout. This was the same layout used for sports car racing and required some changes to accommodate stock car racing, like widening some turns for better ing widths. It didn’t take long for controversy to strike in Sonoma. The 1991 event finished in controversial fashion after polesitter Rudd ed Davey Allison to take the lead with two laps to go. Allison spun out from in the last turn. Rudd was set for victory but was black-flagged three feet from the finish line. Allison was declared the winner.

For 1998-1999, the race reverted to a 1.949-mile layout instead of the sports car racing layout. The changes meant drivers would by turns 5 and 6 via the new “Chute” short straight. Drivers criticized the difference and it was modified again in 2001 to include a 70-degree turn instead. This stretch saw four-time Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon dominate at his home race. He won the event in 1998, 1999, and 2000. Three-time champion Tony Stewart broke his streak in 2001 on the new layout.

Gordon would win again in 2004 and 2006 on the 1.99-mile layout. From 2002 through 2015, Gordon was the only driver to win multiple NASCAR races on the latest design before Stewart won again in 2016. Martin Truex Jr., 2017 Cup Series champion, became the first driver to win consecutive Cup Series events at the track since Gordon with his wins in 2018 and 2019. The 2019 race returned to the 2.52-mile layout to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the track. The Cup Series used this layout again in 2021 before returning to the 1.99-mile design in 2022.

Title sponsorship has changed hands only a few times. Banquet Frozen Foods was the title sponsor from 1989 through 1991. Save Mart Supermarkets has been a title sponsor since 1992 under multiple race names: the Save Mart 300K (1992), Save Mart Supermarkets 300K (1993), Save Mart Supermarkets 300 (1994–1997), Save Mart/Kragen 350 (1998–2000), and Dodge/Save Mart 350 (2001–2006). Toyota has shared title sponsorship with Save Mart Supermarkets since 2007.

The race offers a unique trophy for the winner. A giant wine glass and bottle holder pays homage to the Napa County wine industry near the track. Daniel Suárez won the 2022 Toyota/Save Mart 350. Gordon has the most wins all-time with five.

The Toyota/Save Mart 350 remains a thrilling and highly anticipated race, where legends are made and the NASCAR standings are shaped.
