🏁 Pennzoil 400 History & Highlights

The Pennzoil 400 was first on the NASCAR schedule as the Las Vegas 400 in 1998. Mark Martin took the first win at the circuit in front of a sellout crowd.

CarsDirect.com sponsored the race in 2000, the only edition of the race to be shortened due to rain. Only 148 laps were completed out of the typical 267. Chrysler took over sponsorship starting in 2001. From 2001 to 2007, the race was called the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 before going by the UAW-Dodge 400 in 2008. The 2006 edition saw seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson win in overtime, following 270 laps.

The race was extended in 2009 to 285 laps after Carroll Shelby International took over sponsorship. The race was called the Shelby 427 that year to honor the Shelby 427 Cobra. It was changed to the Shelby American in 2010.

Lowe’s retail company took over sponsorship in 2011, and the races through 2013 were the Kobalt Tools 400. It’d be shortened to the Kobalt 400 from 2014-2017. Pennzoil took over as the title sponsor in 2018.

Johnson has the most all-time wins with four. NASCAR Cup Series champion Matt Kenseth is second, with three wins. Roush Fenway Racing and Hendrick Motorsports are tied with the most team wins at seven each.
